(PREPOSITION AND ADVERB)
Across may mean ‘from one side to the
other side (of)’. It may mean ‘on the other side of’.
* We swam across the river.
* They walked across the road.
* Our home is just across the road.
* We shall soon be across the Channel
and at Dover.
* Will you row me across (the river)?
* She helped the blind man across (the
street).
Across is combined with some verbs and
nouns in special meaning.
* The boys ran across country (i.e.
across fields, open land, etc., not using roads)
* I came across this ivory carving in a
curio shop (found it there by chance).
* The through came across my mind
(occurred to me) that you might like to go with me.
