5. Conditional Type V

Formula / Structure for understanding

(i)
If + sub + were + complement , sub + would + V1

(ii)
If + sub + were + complement , sub + would + have + V3

We can use 'were' instead of 'was'. I were, he were, she were, it were. This is mostly done in formal writing.

BASIC LEVEL

If I were you,
I would buy that dress.

We can say conditional clause, dependent clause or subordinate clause.

→ If I were you, I would buy that dress.
اگر میں تمہاری جگہ ہوتا تو میں وہ لباس خریدتا۔

→ If I were you, I would have bought that dress.
اگر میں تمہاری جگہ ہوتا تو میں وہ لباس خرید چکا ہوتا۔

→ If he were you, he'd ask a lawyer for some advice.
(he’d ask = he would ask)
اگر وہ تمہاری جگہ ہوتا تو وہ کسی وکیل سے کچھ مشورے پوچھتا۔

→ If he were you, he'd have asked a lawyer for some advice.
(he’d ask = he would ask)
اگر وہ تمہاری جگہ ہوتا تو وہ کسی وکیل سے کچھ مشورے پوچھ چکا ہوتا۔۔

→ If she were you, she would have gone there.

→ If I were you, I wouldn't buy that dress.
(wouldn’t = would not)

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

6. Conditional Type VI
(More emphatic Imaginary state)

(i)
Were + sub + complement , sub + would + V1

(ii)
Were + sub + complement , sub + would + have + V3

We can use 'were' instead of 'was'. I were, he were, she were, it were. This is mostly done in formal writing.

We donot use “if

Were I you, I would buy that dress.

"اگر" کا استعمال نہیں ہوگا۔

ہوتا نہ میں تمہاری جگہ تو (میں) وہ لباس خریدتا۔

NOTE
Were I you, I would buy that dress.
It is not an interrogative sentence. If you want to make an interrogative you should make changes in main clause.

See this example:
Were I you, wouldbuy that dress?

Were I you, I would have bought that dress.
ہوتا نہ میں تمہاری جگہ تو (میں) وہ لباس خرید چکا ہوتا۔

Were he you, he'd ask a lawyer for some advice.
(he’d ask = he would ask)

Were he you, he'd have asked a lawyer for some advice.
(he’d ask = he would ask)

Were I you, I wouldn't buy that dress.
(wouldn’t = would not)

Were I you, I would have gone there.
