(if + past perfect , would + have + past participle)

Formula / Structure for understanding

BASIC LEVEL

Conditional clause

Main Clause OR
Independent Clause
If she had gone to bed early,
she would have caught the bus.

We can say conditional clause, dependant clause or subordinate clause.

→ If she had gone to bed early, she would have caught the bus.
اگر وہ جلدی سے سوچکی ہوتی تو وہ بس پکڑ چکی ہوتی۔
یا
اگر وہ جلدی سونے جا چکی ہوتی تو وہ بس پکڑ چکی ہوتی۔

NOT If she would have gone to bed early, she would have caught the bus.

→ If he had invited me, I would have gone there.
اگر وہ مجھے بلا چکا ہوتا تو میں وہاں جا چکا ہوتا ۔
یا
اگر اس نے مجھے بلا لیا ہوتا تو میں وہاں جا چکا ہوتا ۔

→ If she had worked hard, she would have succeeded.
اگر وہ محنت کرچکی ہوتی تو وہ کامیابی حاصل کرچکی ہوتی ۔
یا
اگر وہ محنت کرلیتی تو وہ کامیابی حاصل کرچکی ہوتی ۔

→ If he had earned money, he would have bought a house.
اگر وہ پیسے کما چکا ہوتا تو وہ مکان خرید چکا ہوتا ۔
یا
اگر اس نے پیسے کما لیے ہوتے تو وہ مکان خرید چکا ہوتا ۔

The main clause can also be at the beginning of the sentence. In this case, don't use a comma.

→ He would have bought house if he had earned money.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

The main clause often has would have. We can also use could have or might have.

→ If I'd had my mobile yesterday, I could have contacted you.

(I’d = I had) (I had + had structure is possible in English. First ‘had’ is helping verb while second ‘had’ is main verb and it is third form of ‘have’ see next example)

→ We just caught the train. If we'd stopped to buy a paper, we might have missed it.
(we’d = we had) (‘had’ is helping verb while ‘stopped’ is main verb and it is third form of ‘stop’.)

4. Conditional Type IV
[More emphatic Type III (Conditional Past Participle)]

Formula / Structure for understanding

Had + sub + V3 , sub + would + have + V3

We donot use “if
Had she gone to bed early, she would have caught the bus.
"اگر" کا استعمال نہیں ہوگا۔
سوچکی ہوتی نہ وہ جلدی تو)وہ( بس پکڑ چکی ہوتی۔
یا
سونے جا چکی ہوتی نہ وہ جلدی تو (وہ) بس پکڑ چکی ہوتی۔

NOTE
Had she gone to bed early, she would have caught the bus.
It is not an interrogative sentence. If you want to make an interrogative you should make changes in main clause.

See this example:
Had she gone to bed early, would she have caught the bus?

Had he invited me, I would have gone there.
بلا چکا ہوتا نہ وہ مجھے تو )میں( وہاں جا چکا ہوتا ۔
یا
بلا لیا ہوتا نہ اس نے مجھے تو (میں) وہاں جا چکا ہوتا ۔
